Enrolling in Medicare may seem daunting at first, but the process is simpler than you might imagine. Rest assured—we have the knowledge to help you. Your Medicare Initial Enrollment Period is your opportunity to enroll in Part A, Part B, and Medicare Part D. Most people also use this time to consider Part C (Medicare Advantage), Medicare Supplement plans, and Part D coverage.

What You Will Need to Enroll
Before you start, gather the following:
- Social Security number
- Birth certificate
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence
- Information about any current employer or group health coverage
Having this ready will make enrollment faster and easier.

Step 1: Determine Your Eligibility
Most people become eligible for Medicare at age 65. Others may qualify earlier due to disability, ESRD, or ALS. Some people can delay enrollment if they have qualifying employer coverage. We can help you determine what applies to you.
Step 2: Decide When to Enroll
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP):
Seven-month window around your 65th birthday (3 months before, birthday month, 3 months after). Best time to enroll to avoid penalties.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP):
Available if you have qualifying employer coverage.
General Enrollment Period (GEP):
January 1 – March 31 each year if you missed your IEP. Penalties usually apply.
Step 3: Choose Your Coverage
You must decide how you want to receive your Medicare benefits.
Original Medicare (Part A & Part B):
Hospital and medical insurance.
Medicare Advantage (Part C):
All-in-one plans from private insurers that include Parts A and B and often Part D, plus extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing.
Part D Prescription Coverage:
Drug coverage used in conjunction with a Medicare Supplement Plan and on rare occasions with very specific Medicare Plans.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap):
Not part of Medicare, but many choose it to cover gaps in Original Medicare. If you choose Medigap, you still need Part D. These are provide by private health insurers.
Step 4: Enroll in Medicare
You can enroll in Original Medicare through Social Security:
Online:
Apply through SSA’s “Apply for Benefits” page.
If you only need Part B, use the “Medicare Part B Enrollment” page.
By Phone:
Call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday–Friday, 7 a.m.–7 p.m.
In Person:
Visit your local Social Security office and schedule an appointment.
Automatic Enrollment:
If you already receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits at 65, you’ll be automatically enrolled in Parts A and B. Your card arrives about three months before your birthday.
Step 5: Add Prescription and/or Supplemental Coverage
After enrolling in Parts A and B, you choose:
- Stay on Original Medicare and get a Part D plan;
- Decide between Medicare Advantage or Original Medicare + Medigap and sign up through a private health insurer to do so.

- Medicare Advantage typically has Part D coverage as well as supplemental benefits like dental, vision, and hearing.
- If you chose Original Medicare + MediGap , then you also need to sign up for a Part D plan. There’s a lifetime late fee if you don’t! They don’t have supplemental benefits so you would need to sign up for those.

Step 6: Review Your Coverage Every Year
Your health needs and plan costs can change. Review your coverage during:
Annual Enrollment Period: October 15 – December 7, we can start looking at them Oct 1 each year.
This is when you can switch or change plans. We can help you review your options. Don’t delay. We get VERY busy during this period.
